I'll tell you about Mesopotamia since that's my culture :) The women were granted rights to property and given rights to divorce. There was also a queen named Semiramis (Shamiran in Assyrian) who took the thrown after her husband's death (the king) and commanded the military--she had full control of the nation. Women were granted with respect and given many rights. As for the Mesopotamian land--it was fertile but arid, this lead to the invention of the irrigation system which brought large amounts of water from near-by sources of water to the city using pipe-like structures. This helped farmers grow crops and cultivate land. I guess geography of the Mesopotamian landscape played a positive role because it lead to the invention of the irrigation system--thanks to them we have toilets!! Hope I helped.
