5x + 2x -4 = 4x = 5
Move all x terms to the left and all constants to the right
Moving terms will change their signs (+ to - or - to +)
5x + 2x - 4x = 5 + 4
Add all terms
3x = 9
Solve for x
x = 9 / 3
x = 3
Substituting 3 for all values of x in the original equation
5(3) + 2(3) - 4 = 4(3) + 5
15 + 6 - 4 = 12 + 5
17 = 17
x = 3 makes the equation equivalent

You'd add 5x+2x which is 7x
7x-4=4x+5
Then you'd take the 4 from the left and add it to the 5 on the right
7x=4x+9
Then you subract take the 4x from the right and subract it from the 7x on the left
3x=9
then take the 3 from the 3x and divide the 9 by it.. 9 divided by 3 is 3.. so
x=3

5x +2x = 7x
7x-4 = 4x+5
add four to both sides of the equation
7x = 4x +9
subtract 4x from both sides of the equation
3x = 9
divide both sides by 3
x=3
