For one thing, start NOW.
Don't wait for the holidays. I'll tell you why. MANY people feel they want to help and call up agencies, offering their services. This happens quite often, but when these people are expected, they USUALLY don't show up, or bother to cancel their committment. This can cause all kinds of problems and dissapointments for those expecting the help.
The other problem is that your sincerity is called into question when you say you only want to help during the holidays. These people have a great need all year round, not just during the holidays. What staffers picture is someone who only wants to be around these people during the "fun" times, to hand out presents and dish out soup while bright Xmas carols are playing in the background. And then these people dissapear. What about those orphans (or old people, or sick people, etc.) who wake up the day after to find all those smiling faces gone?
Many of them, even the children know that they have been abandoned, .... again.
Get involved now. Even if it's just weekends. Let these people that you care about them, not just about making yourself feel better, once a year.

If you know of an orphanage close by, you could give them a call and ask them about volunteering. Or do a a search online for orphanages.

Try your local Council for information about volunteer work, have you got a C.R.B. check, before applying. If you are unsuccessful there are plenty of
charities, look on the Internet, or telephone book, you may want to help with
the homeless in serving hot food, try the, Salvation Army.
Good luck in volunteering, and trying to do a well worthy cause.
Regards.
Lain.

Well, if you're in the US, "orphanages" are a thing of the past, technically. They are now called "children's homes". Try looking under that in your phonebook or online. Good luck.

Orphanages no longer exist, and you will be frustrated going thru social services...it's all foster care....try Big Brother or Sister or the YMCA/YWCA, or similar groups
