It was the old chestnut - musical differences. Zach de la Rocha was interested in techno music , while the others wanted to continue in a more heavier vein. That's why Zach has worked with Roni Size & the other 3 joined forces with Soungarden's Chris Cornell to form Audioslave.

Their lead singer Zack de la Rocha released this statement:

"I feel that it is now necessary to leave Rage because our decision-making process has completely failed. It is no longer meeting the aspirations of all four of us collectively as a band, and from my perspective, has undermined our artistic and political ideal. I am extremely proud of our work, both as activists and musicians, as well as indebted and grateful to every person who has expressed solidarity and shared this incredible experience with us."

The band has since went on - without Zack - to form the group Audioslave. Taking on Chris Cornell from Soundgarden as their lead singer. But I personally think they now stink. We need to start a petition or something to bring Zack back. I miss him. lol. ;-)
