1) Multiply / divide first, then add / subtract second.

2) Put the numbers preceded by + or - signs inside brackets, so that they look like this when you're finished: - (5) and - (4). Your equation should now look like this: x/7 - (5) = - (4)

3) Multiply both sides of the equation by 7/1 to free up the value of "x" by doing this: 7/1 times x/7 - (7/1 times 5/1) = - (7/1 times 4/1) or like this: 7/1 x x/7 - (7/1 x 5/1) = - (7/1 x 4/1)

4) When multiplied out the equation then looks like this: 7x/7 - (35/1) = - (28/1).

5) Step four, when divided out, then looks like this: x minus 35 = minus 28, or like this: x - 35 = - 28

6) Now do the adding and subtracting. To isolate "x", add 35 to both sides. The equation should now look like this: x + 35 - 35 = + 35 - 28

7) Now complete the addition / subtraction of the numbers on the left side. The equation should now look like this: x = + 35 - 28

8) Now complete the addition / subtraction of the numbers on the right side of the equation. Since + 35 - 28 equals 7, then x = 7.

9) Always make sure you are multiplying, dividing, adding or subtracting the same number on both sides of the equation at the same time. Equation is derived from the Latin, meaning "equal".

10) Suggest you print this note and keep it for reference - it will help you solve similar problems, provided you really care to learn this - enjoy.

first add 5 to both sides...

x/7=-4+5
X/7=1
give the 1 a denominator so you can cross multiply
x/7=1/1
x=7

x/7=1
x=1/7

add the 5 to both sides then you divide each side by whats left over which is 7 and anything dividing by a number larger than it is a fraction so its 1/7
