A crusty loaf still warm from the bakery. My husband always referred to sliced bread as 'mother's shame'. Brits appear to have lost the art of slicing a loaf.
An American-Chinese visiting Switzerland once asked me why the Swiss couldn't make 'proper' bread. He objected to the crust.

Well, after years of rather dull stuff, they all went crazy for that new-fangled leavened, (levened?) bread. They thought they understood, at that point, what civilisation was all about. They really thought they had hit sophisticated tastes and style BIG time.
Then, of course, as we all know, progress came along in the form of Mother's Pride, and the rest is history
