Enormously.

Our thoughts create our world. Stereotyping is a way to take a human: something which is completely fluid & dynamic; full of nearly infinite possibility, & imagine it as severely limited, defined by one or two universal, usually negative traits. Stereotyping is a form of self-deception & it makes our worlds smaller, uglier, duller, less full of the potential it actually displays. This effects behavior negatively: the actions toward the stereotyped individuals are not of the kind one would hope for one's self.

It's just a bad deal all around.

You bet it does. Cooley's "looking glass self" applies here. It basically states that how you're precieved is through how others preceive you. So if you're labeled a "burnout", you'll eventually think you're good for nothing and are worthless, etc.

The reverse applies as well, like the high school quarter back who gets everything he wants, he'll be told he's the greatest thing ever and guess what, he'll become vain and think everyone's there to serve him.

Stereotyping is just a mass wave of "looking glass self" when you think about it.

Hugely. It's about predicting consequences of actions beforehand. If you eat a bright red berry, and get two days of the runs, you'll be more careful of red berries in the future. Unfortunately, when it comes down to predicting eachother's behavior, the subject becomes too complicated for stereotypes to be accurate.
