The cost to rent a a garage would be more than anywhere else
And since there are so few parking spaces in NY, not many people that live there that I know actually have cars - the ones that do live OUTSIDE the city, so you might want to consider locating your business and living in the other boroughs (Bklyn, Staten Island, Queens, the Bronx) rather than Manhattan.

While many people want to come to New York, not many people ask a New Yorker if they should come. If you abilities with modification and customization garages are strong enough, and you have the drive to succeed you may succeed.
However, New York is a very expensive place to live. You need to save some money before you come. Be careful with your money when you come. There are still people who want to scam the newcomers out of their money.
It will always be cheaper to start a business in other places.
If you are really sure you want to come to New York when you are older, visit it before then. See more than just the tourist attractions. Take a look at the prices in the stores. Compare them to where you live. (You may even find some things cost less, depending where you are from.)
The competition in New York is difficult to deal with. There are no guarantees. Good luck.
I live in New York State.
close enough to NYC.

Go ahead and do it, that's if you can get a work permit and prove that you have somewhere to live first.
