My son attends school in Oklahoma and is required to wear a uniform. Personally, I love it. This coming from a person who has always been outspoken about individuals expressing themselves as individuals. I like the policy because it ends the debate about what to wear every morning. It also helps kids to stop worrying about what everyone else is wearing and focus on school. It also eliminates some of the problem with kids who look down on others who can't afford the newest looks. Kids are mean and cruel. School is not a fashion show. Kids have plenty of time to wear the newest looks elsewhere. I was the kid with purple hair and pierced lip in high school, but I can look at this objectively and say that I still like uniforms in school. If my son chooses to dress differently when he is older, that's fine, and I will support him, but for school, I prefer uniforms.

Well it's not an Oklahoma thing. I'd say a good 40% of schools in the U.S. wear uniforms. If you go to other countries almost 100% of the schools do.
As to why... Not everyone can afford the same luxuries and having uniforms allows students to learn in an environment that is more equal.

I work in a large urban school district, the third largest in the nation, Most of our schools have a uniform dress code and it really helps keep order in the class room. First it eases dress pressure on less wealthy parents. No one is trying to keep up with the best dressed student. Second when the dress code is strictly enforced it eliminates gang identification. Lastly it saves time in the morning and the kids get to school on time for a change. No changing outfits ten times to get the right look.
My favorite reason, I don't have to work in a school with students that look like street walkers, with pants hanging to their knees and lastly NO PAJAMAS!

Some people say its to promote equality and remove all the social pressures associated with clothes. If everyone has the same clothes no-one is judged differently. The also don't want to have to deal with dress code. However, this will always be incorrect because the standards of how one wears the uniform will always be different, and seperation will still occur.

uniforms promote discipline, which is necessary to develop in young people so they grow up to be productive citizens. Also, uniforms help deter kids from picking on each other based on style or for being "poor" (if they can't afford nice clothes), AND keeps gang influences down since kids can't wear gang related outfits.
Mostly though, i think its the discipline/respect thing.

Last years, when I was in middle school, we had to wear uniforms.
The only reason why they made us wear uniforms was to protect us from mockery.
If someone couldn't afford a brand of clothing and didn't look "in." People would make fun of them. Well kids are mean people.
It's all just apart of fitting in.

Because if they don't guys will wear offensive or gang cloths and the girls will all dress like whores. With uniforms kids have to wait until after school to be whores and delinquents.

It is a sign of professionalism and it's respectable. How can any decent person respect someone who's wearing a **** you t-shirt.
