It may be a couple of reasons. Lack of ram, lack of Hard drive space, spyware problems, a virus. If you could give me more details about your problem, comp specs, etc. I may be able to help you. As for now run a virus scan (Many free antivirus programs, AVG antivirus for example), then a spyware scan (many free ones out there). If your running windows XP, make sure you have at LEAST 512mb ram to run at optimal performance.

I had this problem once and all I did was take the cover off the pc and got rid of all the dust using a can of compressed air. You must clean a pc at least every 4 to 5 months.

It usually happens when your computer goes into a screensaver or power saving mode. Usually this happens when you have a low spec computer, since it happened to me before I changed all the parts inside. Erm, the only way to fix this is to update your computer I guess. What are your specs and what operating system are you using.
Also, it could be another reason, hardware issue, e.g. power, Graphics card...

all you can do is disable the standby mode so your computer can't go into it in the first place. here is how to do that
