It was a war over states rights. Before the civil war, the constitution had provisions for any state that felt that the federal government was getting out of line in it's legislature of the country could cede from the union, split away. This was in place to keep the federal government from becoming exactly what it is today, a mild form of dictatorship. America was not founded as a democracy, it was founded as a Republic. A Democracy always changes it's laws to suit the people and it's leaders, we are the only free nation on this earth with a constitution.
