I think their pride of Ashcroft probably ended when he told them they were breaking the law by listening into innocent American's phone conversations. He broke rank and that doesn't go over very well...

I would say that for both sides, people believe in the values and beliefs that their party stand for and less so for the leaders. Ending name calling wars would be a good start to dealing with key issues.
