Two weeks ago my USB ports worked fine, my ipod worked, as did my thumbstyle flash drives. then suddenly when i use either of those two devices, it says windows doesnt recognize the device. But, my printer still works through my usb port. Then, a couple of days ago, one day after watching a dvd on my computer, whenever i try to read a dvd or data dvd, it says i have an I/O error. Whats going on?

Every so often you need to put your computer through a safe start. That cleans out a lot of garbage.
Clean out your temp file (under Documents and settings) yourname folder, local files, temp
Also, have you checked whether you have caught a virus?

Get Spy-bot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware, Windows Defender, and AVG Antivirus. All are free downloads. Download them, update them, and run them. Once though Windows and once through "Safe Mode". After that if they still don't function right, un-install the USB ports and the DVD drive in question, using the device manager and then reboot the computer. This will reload the drivers, they may have gotten corrupt.

try troubleshooting your power supply. replace with something higher. or just try a different power supply

there may not be enough power to supply your system to properly operate.

trust me. it's worth a try. i repaired at least 10 units the same problem that you have
