Personally, I think its YES.

I started in corporate-America in 1995 and when something like a computer-virus came, all the people younger than I went home b/c they could not work; accounting is the same no matter what organization or industry and can often be completed by hand, though not in large volumes. This was a failure that happened b/c of a large dependance on computers.

I have also been a teacher when leaving grad-school. I have read/reviewed many math programs (... as well as dated women my age ...), they could not do basic fuctions (i.e. add, subtract, multiply, divide) by hand. That was 'CRAZY' to me but I am starting to see it as more of a norm.

My issue with this is that IF the technology breaks or attains a virus, work should continue in some form or fashion. I started taking sailing classes this past year and wanted to take the obscure classes of coastal & celestial navigation. This is rather functionless with a gps, but I have read stores about boats getting caught in squalls and the engine dies. Guess what... no power, no gps!!!

If the mariners of ole can do it with knowing less about climatology, oceanography, and meteorology, then I had just as well learn it too. Better safe than sorry!!!

In numerous ways, yes. Most people use calculators instead of doing math in their heads. It's only getting worse with advanced technology. We are already totally reliant on computer accounting systems to conduct business, and soon we will be reliant on GPS systems for all freight/travel. If the satellites ever fail, we will be in trouble. Technology is great, but it will help us to forget the fundamentals...

Some people have become obsessed with technology. They can't live without it and they are prisoners of it.
