Most states really need people to volunteer to work at the polls on Election Day -- and in fact, many states will pay you for your service!

To find out how to be a poll worker on Election Day, visit your state's Secretary of State Web site and locate a phone number or other contact information for your local county or registrar's office. Also, the local registrar's number is usually located in the government section of your local phone book (that's the section shaded in blue or gray in the front of the phone book).

Also, be careful to note the distinction between "voter registration" and "polls," per your question. Voter registration is something you must complete in order to vote in most states. And "polls" are the locations where you go to vote on Election Day (they are not referred to as "voter registration polls")...All the language can get pretty confusing, but you have the right idea!

Contact your local Board of Elections. In Franklin County, OH you can apply on-line. There is a 3 hour training class required for new poll workers. You must retake the class every 3 years or whenever the rules change. Each state will have different rules.

Both major political parties supply poll clerks. Contact either one.
You can also contact your local board of voter registration, this is the office that actually handles elections in your town/city.
