The Stage is the best place to look for open auditions.
You do not need to be a member of Equity at all but it is a good idea to join as it gives you insurance and they are very helpful should you ever have any problems with contracts etc.
Have you been to drama school or trained at all? It would be very hard for you to be cast in a musical if you have had no training or experience. If you haven't, you might want to join your local theatre groups or audition for the National Youth Music Theatre.
Good luck!

Newspapers usually give you audition notices for walk-ons or extras roles. An agent gets you in the door for the speaking roles.
