The Time Traveller's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger

Although I love HG Wells' "Time Machine," my favorite is actually a short story. Not sure if that counts, since it is not a stand-alone book

So my answer would be "A Sound of Thunder," by Ray Bradbury. If I remember correctly, that was the first instance of what has come to be known as the "Butterfly Effect," where people travel back in time and kill a butterfly, thereby setting off a chain of events that completely alters the present.

I agree with AlpineALL the "Time travellers wife" is excellent.. but my favourite is "Up the line" by Robert Silverberg, closely followed by "Times without number" by John Brunner.

Incidentally "The Time Machine" was written by HG Wells when he was a teenager, and he re-wrote it 14 times, making it a very polished novel.

Also a mystery "sequel" book to "The Time Machine" was discovered, and told how when the TT jumped back in his machine again at the end of the first book, he was sent the wrong way in time due to a fault in the machine, and ended up in 1665, dying of the plague.

Tricky one that, I have a few favourite time travel stories/books, or works of fiction that have time travel as lesser part of the overall plot.

Consider Her Ways - John Wyndham
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - Douglas Adams
The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy (5 part trilogy) - Douglas Adams
The Time Machine - H.G. Wells
By His Bootstraps - Robert A. Heinlein

To name but a few!

After HG's The Time Machine, I reckon Ian Watson's "The Very Slow Time Machine" is up there with the best
