I always prefer the flying fox to plecos. They don't get as large as plecos and will eat regular fish food when there isn't algae.

Do your research. There are many types of fish, snails and shrimp who eat algae. Make sure your tank is cycled. and that the adult size of the algae eater you want isn't bigger than your tank can handle and the critter is compatable with your other fish.

Unless you have a HUGE tank, do NOT get a common pleco. They can get like a foot and a half long.

Ottos and ramshorn snails are good for cleaning up brown algae. I think bristlenose plecos do too and they don't get as big as common plecos.

For hair algae you could try ameca splendens, swordtails, amano shrimp or a flying fox.

Contrary to popular belief, Pleco's don't eat the algae like you think that they do. They are bottom dwellers and will eat the left over food as will any fish when it is hungry. I would suggest to look around for a bottom dweller that you would be interested in watching grow. The only cure for algae is to not over feed your fish and do regular water changes and to keep on top of your filter system. One last word of advice is if you still plan on getting a bottom dweller such as a Pleco then you need to also purchase Algae Wafers and drift wood to keep your Pleco happy and extend its life.

I wait 2 weeks after setting up a tank before adding the alge eaters. Then you know the tank has cycled and alge should have started to grow. You can alway add the alge waffers if you think he's not getting enought! Good luck!

As long as algae has started growing, you have waited long enough. You can get them now.
