I agree...messing around with the lineups and not dressing certain players is a little crazy in important qualifiers, but give it some time. I also agree not seeing Cassano and Gilardino is a bit of a disappointment, but going with a more experienced lineup right now might be the key. Cassano can be explosive and Gilardino is a great contributor in the offensive zone, but it seems to me that Donadoni is pulling out the big guns with experience for these next two games. Italy needs points badly. Although I do see your point, it was the lesser known people in the WC who contributed, Gross for example. No coach likes to lose though. In my opinion Donadoni will put the best players on the pitch that he can for the games. Plus Toni and Del Piero missed the first two games. Just relax though. I'm thinking 2-0 win for Italy on Saturday with atleast one goal by my man Del Piero. Forza Azzurri.

Well, he said this time he wasn't taking the players who were out of form like Cassano or Gilardino, who haven't scored goals these times. I think it isn't a tragedy if he didn't take Cassano coz Lippi didn't take him as well and he hasn't played much with Real Madrid in the start of the season like the year before, so he can't guarantee constancy for the moment, but I think it was a wrong decision not taking Gila. He remains one of the best strikers of Italy even if he hasn't scored this season and he did well (he was the best player for Italy in fact) in the match against France when he played as the only forward between 4 France defenders and scored a goal as well. Maybe Di Natale or Di Michele are scoring goals with their teams but we have to remember from what teams they come, with all the respect for Palermo or Udinese but they need some time to fill the gap between playing in an important team or not coz they aren't used to that kind of pressure of very important matches like players of Milan, Juve etc

Donadoni has started his adventure with the wrong foot... and he is trying to "patch" his previous mistakes.
The first time he sat on the bench, (friendly game) he just picked several new players (many never been in the National Team) and the "experiment" did not work well.
After that he called back few WORLD CHAMPIONS, but that was not enough either (even though Cassano was the big news, after Capello "re-generated" him in Madrid) and he received criticism for not calling Luca Toni.
Now he decided that Cassano (who is not playing much in Madrid) and Gilardino (poor start in Serie A) were not in condition of ensuring him adequate performances in the next two games. That is why he called Del Piero, Di Michele and Di Natale. It is a technical choice and as such should be respected.
I think it is a big risk he is taking: in case he loses one of the two games, surely he will be removed from his place.
It is a very delicate situation, because the WORLD CHAMPIONS were used to be managed by an experienced coach like Lippi, whose main job was to create a "group" of players devote to only one goal: go as far as they could without listening to the criticism and to the media. Donadoni is young and he did not have time to prepare "his" group... now he is trying to rely on the "old senator" from the World Cup, but it may not be enough.
Do not forget that he has Iaquinta and Toni, and probably he will line them up with the Ukraine + Del Piero as a third forward.
For Mrs. Materazzi:
Cassano was not the replacement for Materazzi. Cassano is a striker while Materazzi is a central defender.
Cassano has been replaced by Del Piero, while Materazzi I doubt will play, because there is Nesta and Cannavaro as defenders (and Barzagli as a substitute) + two from Zambrotta, Grosso, Oddo and Pasqual as lateral defenders.

Cassano was actually a replacement until Materazzi returned.. Its upsetting cause Cassano is very good.
COVERCIANO – Azzurri national coach Roberto Donadoni had this to say about a player that is very dear to Rossoneri fans: ‘Gilardino is part of the national team. The fact that he was called up this time doesn’t mean anything. They are valuations of the moment, for him and Antonio Cassano the national door is always open. They can stay calm.
Its bad that he left Gila out but we have Luca Toni, Marco Materazzi, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Mauro Comeransi, Cristian Zaccardo, Alessandro Del Piero, Alessandro Nesta back in so thats a good thing!

I don't know but Donadoni is making a huge mistake in not picking Gilardino. He's a great player and he's proved it so many times. Cassano, I don't really like him and I don't know much about him either. But Gilardino is one of our great and best player, so I think that either Donadoni is not able to perform his job correctly and he is not able to support that tension and therefore he's mad and desperate that he's picked players that are good but young. You know, I don't really appreciate Donadoni's method of coaching. Lippi's coaching was more better than this one. And I regret Lippi's departure.

Well, Luca Toni and Del Piero were just recently called up (also Iaquinta, Camoranesi, Materazzi, and Nesta were called up today) Those two are really good players! So they replaced Cassano and Gilardino.
