bob washed a red honda civic in 10mins and 56 secs and lee washed a black honda civic in 13mins and 18secs.how long would it take for them to wash a yellow honda civic together? there is only 1 of each:1 hose,1 bucket,1 sponge,etc..when they are washing the yellow car.

(this is a question that i've always been wondering about)

Unless the question is incorrect and there is no limit on the sponges and hose(r)s, ...

Then we need to resolve if indeed speed is the criteria, or whether a split of tasks is the objective.

If speed is the "test, then the answer is 10.56 minutes - Bob handles the whole thing. (This is the engineer's solution).

If we have lots of cleaning supplies, then it is a it is a split task, and a much more interesting, if not senselessly complicated mathematics problem. After 5.28 minutes, Bob has finished his half, and Lee has 1.09 minutes left to finish his half. If he is left to his devices and Bob gets the beer, then the total time will be half Lee's time: 6:39 minutes.

However, if Lee and Bob split the remaining quantity of the car in the same proportion, then after the first 5.28 seconds, there will be 8.5% of the car to be completed by the two in the same proportion. This is another of those infinite series, where mathematicians and engineers battle it out. It would end up being less than 6.39, and more than 5.28.

I like the idea of getting that beer .. (I'm an engineer!)

depends how smart the 2 are... rip the sponge in half if its big enough... if not let bob do the job in the 10min and 56 secs...he's a trooper
