Can communities and families do something to avoid such tragedies? Or, are changes in legislation and law enforcement required?

If someone is determined enough, there's no way to stop him.

I suppose schools could put guards with metal detectors at every door and screen everyone who enters the building. Schools in some parts of the country do that now. But that won't stop shootings outside the building, on or near the school grounds.

Students can be part of the solution. If someone sees a classmate acting strangely or suspiciously, he or she should report it to a teacher or administrator.

Parents can be part of the solution too. They should pay attention to what their kids are doing, especially their blogging activities. Some of the kids who have killed people at schools have written about it in blogs or e-mails beforehand. Vigilant parenting could have prevented some of the violence.

It's not the safety of the schools that is the issue. You cannot be 100% safe no matter where you are. It's the people who are the issue. We need to figure out what is wrong with a society that can give rise to young people who kill. It's partially the breakdown of the family, partially the intense pressure bullies exert in the schools, the removal of corporal punishment, the removal of prayer, the pledge of allegiance, and anything else that teaches young people discipline and respect. Until we return to the traditional values of our forefathers we will continue to experience the worse humanity has to offer in ever increasing and shocking displays until the destruction of humanity and our planet is complete.

Nope. there replace right into a significant college taking photos decrease back around the early 1900's (and 30 something youngsters died), whilst prayer replace into very plenty at school. the suitable factor to do could be to start taking psychological and emotional subject concerns heavily and attempting to help those with suggested subject concerns so they do no longer evaluate mass homicide a reliable concept.

The bad guys prefer unarmed victims!!.
When seconds matter calling 911 and asking the bad guy to wait is not a viable option.

Better to have a gun and not need it than to need it and not have it!!!
**Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens.**

So you are against the private ownerships of gun! Do you believe in fire extinguishers? Why, you can always call the fire department!!

First we must determine what conditions generate the feelings that motivate people to do that. Then we must change those conditions. Simple. But not easy. AND, it would require a genuine group effort by many people. I'm not hopeful, sorry to say.

hire security to check all who enter, lock up school while class is in session and as part of the registration process do psychological profiles and c-pics where applicable.Pay attention to fellow students and regularly report concerns to faculty. Maybe it would help.

It is not possible to prevent them. You can only make them less likely. I ask, is it worse to live with a little danger, or to have every student in every school patted down and locked into the building every day of their lives? The chance of even being in the same school as one of these shootings by my estimates is 1 in 100,000. It's a minor nuisance! Live dangerously. Live free.
