Fast runner at third -- runner fakes a steal toward home, but just enought to get catcher to run him back to third... Then, if catcher tosses the ball to the pitcher "as he walks back to home", runner takes off full speed and slides into home. (To get runner out, the pitcher will have to make a good throw to catcher who is out of position, running back to cover unguarded homeplate.)

Well, if your really talking textbook, then no. Once the catcher starts to chase the runner back to third, then, the pitcher should be heading to back up at the plate. Just in case the runner decides to go if there is a throw to third. If this is done, then the catcher should hand the ball back to the pitcher when the play is over. At that point they could call time 'til everyone is in position.
In reality, a good catcher and pitcher aren't going to take their eyes off the runner once they think he's got something up his sleeve.

It seems the best way to get from third to home without the assistance of the batter is to dance around on the third base line, you know, really cause a ruckus, and try to get the pitcher to balk. This would be a really excellent strategy if anyone actually knew what the definition of a balk was.

no this is nearly impossible, the chances 2 of these happen in one year is just unheard of now-a-days. its an auto out, and all these guys would have been out with a toss to third if the pitcher was looking.
50% of runners on 3rd score. much chance than stealing home.
you ruin a scoring op. and kill the inning. same with stealing 3rd.

No. This is the best way to steal home:
1) Have a right-handed pitcher who
- Is very slow in his delivery to first
- Forgets that there's a runner on third base
2) Have Carl Crawford on third base.

no, cause catchers (if they are smart) won't walk out in front of the plate or run far down the line to chase someone back. It is a good idea if you have a dumb catcher but if they know what they are doing then it wouldn't work

Maybe in little league. Where do you think the pitcher and 1st basemen are during all this?
The Twins used to have 2 speedsters that both stole home the real way. Caesar Tovar and Rod Carew.

No. A good catcher isn't going to bother running down the line. He's just going to use his cannon and toast the guy before he gets back to the bag.

I'd say the best way if there are less than two outs and only one run is needed is just the good ol' squeeze play.
