I've tired different beds and that did not help. It hurst most in the morning and feels better after 15 minutes of stretching. I don't want to take pills and I do not want surgery. I do not have pain going down the leg. I'm not over weight. I bicycle about 20 miles a week and am in good shape. The chiropractors said my disc near the L5 is just worn out and that it will hurt till I die. I'm only 40 years old and want to do another triathlon next year, but can't do much because of the back pain.

Strength Training is the most beneficial aspect for any skeletal problems.....go to a fitness centre, get a trained technician to demonstrate the correct procedure for all of the equipment.Always, always do static stretching after your workout. Buy a vitamin supplement that contains Glucosamine Hydrochloride and Chondroitin Sulfate, in about 1 month you will notice a sense of relief from the pain when you awake in the morning.........

You sound like my sister in law...without the athletics. She has had chronic low back stuff going on for years, her pregnancies were excruciating.

She finally had an MRI done and she has 3 bad discs in her lower back. She has done alot of research and found a procedure that fixes the problem without fusion (which is a common surgery that tends towards lots of other problems down the road).

Its a surgery that puts a spacer between the bony extrusions of the vertebrate. I'm sure that is an oversimplified explanation but its supposed to provide nearly instant relief and has a very short recovery time.

An older lady in our town had it done and she says that for the first time in decades she has no pain in her legs or back and wishes the procedure had been available sooner for her.

There is a place in Hastings, NE that specializes in the procedure and its being taught all over the U.S. now. Europe has been using it for years.

Disc issues are awful. I completely understand your pain. Outside of using a back brace and pain meds (anti inflammatory and muscle relaxants) you are going to have to have some sort of surgery done. Discs don't get better on their own.

An MRI will tell you what is going on, one way or the other.

Good luck and Goddess Bless!

Theres alot that can be done. Chiropractors believe in the body healing itself. Most chiropractors will begin with manual therapy, or adjustments. Subluxations are kind of like little kinks in the spinal cord. With certain force and the positioning of the hand, a chiropractor can straighten the spine. Sometimes you may need orthodicts, because pain can sometimes begin at your feet. The way you stand, sit, or walk can aggrevate the pain. Anyways some chiropractors just use manual therapy with their hands, others have devices, like rolling pin type things. It's best to consult with one first to see if chiropractic care can benefit you. Most chiropractors offer free consultations.

L5 disc hernation is pretty common .

I am not at all surprised that a Chiropractor said that "it will hurt till I die" as they have no trick in their book to cure a hernated disc .

Try a PT ( Physiotherapist ) who since they have medical training tend to know what they are doing .

They can advise you of options , Surgery like Disk replacement is an option but as a last resort .

I think you are 1/2 way to solving the problem yourself as you are exercising and stretching quite a lot .

The key here for you is to find the correct exercise regime for your problem .

Ruptured and/or herniated discs can heal themselves , If you are doing the right exercises - So all is not lost :)

As everyone else has been saying , Avoid Chiropractors , The are not Doctors and they rely frequently on tricks to make people think they are doing them some good

I'm 41, and I have the chronic back pain as well. I had my m.d. do an mri scan to see exactly what the problem was. an x-ray doesn't show it all. I had this done a year ago, and found out I have a congenital birth defect that can't be fixed but with pain injections, and pills. DO STAY AWAY FROM THE CHIRO> Your best bet is to see a dr. of osteopathic medicine.

I would certainly make more use of the health care system. See your family physician to get some basic tests (like a legitimate X-ray read by a radiologist) and maybe an MRI. Then your doctor may refer you and your test resuts to a neurosurgeon or an orthopedist who specialized in back problems.

From your description, it sounds like you may have degenerative disc disease in L5. But I've seen so many bizarrely inaccurate diagnoses from chiropractors that its hard for me to place faith in it. Perhaps this is correct, but it won't hurt to get a second opinion anyway. I would want one before resigning myself to a lifetime of pain. There are non-addictive medications that can help the pain. That's up to you. As long as you are functioning as well as you like, pain won't kill you.

A course of physical therapy may be considered as well, but speak with your doctor about this first.

If you have a deteriorated disc run don't walk as far as you can from that chiropractor. You are no doubt making it worse with that yanking around. Next see a "real" doctor for proper treatment. Your next steps are pills and surgery.
