Contact them and find out. I think its bad form to break off pieces of something. Not good for the environment or anything.

That 's the way some parasites are transported out of their natural habitats and away from the natural predictors that keep them under control. There are custom laws and park laws against removing lava from the island. Also its just plain bad luck!

How would you like it if everyone that came to your home, just broke a piece off and took it with them. Only to throw it away later? You want a souvenir? Buy them at the store, take pictures, buy postcards, make a separate scrapbook for each duty station. Pictures are so much better then dirt or rocks.

Here is the park's information.

You know, there are so many people that have experienced horrible luck after taking lava rocks that I do wonder if it's really true. I think it might be just because of the large pile of returned lava rocks that the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park had on display along with letters asking for Pele's (the goddess of lava) forgiveness. I personally would return them. It's better to be safe than sorry, right?

If you want to return your rocks, you can mail them to Pele by mailing it to: Headquarters, Volcanoes National Park, Volcano, HI 96785 with a letter of apology. There are also people that will accept your lava rocks and wrap them in "good luck" ti leaves when returning them near the volcano, but they request a $15 donation for their service. I personally don't think it's worth it to send it to these guys. Just send it back to the Volcanoes National Park, that should be good enough.

If you think your mom would get mad at you, maybe you can ask a trusted adult like an aunt or uncle for help shipping the rocks back, if you have one nearby. Or maybe even an older sibling or friend with access to a car so that they can take you to the post office. They might not believe the superstition, but if you show them that it's important to you that the rocks be returned, they'll probably help you. Best wishes!

That is the way the superstition goes...if you take the rocks from the Goddess Pele, you will have bad luck. There are many tales of tourists who took rocks, had bad luck and sent the rocks back. So if you choose to believe the myth, just throwing them away will do no good, they have to be returned to the island. It would be better for your peace of mind if you returned them. Surely you have some other memento from your time in that beautiful place other than the rocks. You can pick up volcanic rocks all over the Southwest, if it's the idea of it being from a volcano that intrigues you. Or you can think of something you might like to have and write to one of your friends there and have them send it to you.

I know the superstition is that the Goddess Pele don' like it...So if it is bothering you, you can try one of two things...

Returning the rocks...

Do some research and try and find out, maybe there might be a way to appease the Goddess...I'm not up on the Hawaiian lore, so I don't know, but I'm sure there's a way to appease the Goddess...Hopefully and still keep the rocks as a remembrance...

My Dad took some from Hawaii as a souvenir, but then again, knowing him, I don't think he'd have much trouble from a Goddess...Her husband maybe, but not her...

Some guys just have a bit of larceny and a rake in their hearts.

Hail Eris! All Hail Discordia!

The "curse of Pele" was probably made up by a park rangers and native Hawaiians to discourage tourists from taking the rocks. Why? Well, it's a violation of federal law to take anything out of a national park.

However, if you are still concerned, you can send the rocks and sand back... Or (even better) you could go back to Hawaii and offer gin to the goddess to appease her anger.

I saw a special on TV (I think it was the Travel Channel) and a park ranger who works at the volcano national park said that he gets rocks in the mail from people who want to return their volcanic rocks. I guess it's kinda like stealing Pele's teeth or something. The guy says that pretty much everybody who steals the rocks wishes they hadn't and many just want to give them back. I don't know if it makes them feel better--I guess they feel like they're breaking the curse.

Plus, you're taking something from a national park--always a bad idea. Send them back (in a padded envelope) with your apologies. That guy totally understands. But don't throw them away--that would accomplish nothing but make you feel angry and guilty. Mail them back. Just for your conscience's sake.

The myth is Pele will cause the bad luck until she is returned to her rightful place. However since you are 13 it could just the fact that you are teenager and everything is hard when you are a teen. It is up to you to decide if it is the rocks or just you.
