I've heard it called a marker on film sets and clapboard off film sets. SO it just might both depending on the location.

It's called a slate. The Camera Assistant will yell "marker" just before clapping it shut.

In the UK it was a "clapperboard" but thats probably a bit old fashioned now. My be "marker" or "slate"as in US.
