What are the United Nations?

Question

Can someone just briefly discuss the United Nations? answer questions like who is in the United Nations, what does it do, e.t.c. .
Put in a way that a 6th grader could understand.

I'd appreciate facts not opinions....

The United Nations is a giant waste of money used to let third world dictators parade around in fancy limousines and go to fancy parties that they would never get invited to otherwise. Also, it provides a totally corrupt bureaucracy for these dictators to hand out jobs to their friends and relatives.

Aside from the UN being a waste of money and prime real estate in New York, Wikipedia is a great place to get many answers. The original concept of the UN was great but now some world leaders use it to parade their dictatorship around.

Created after WWII as a way to avoid another world war. The UN building is in New York City. Member countries each send a representative. They vote on what to do. Sometimes members agree to send UN troops into a troubled region as peacekeepers. The UN can do only what its members let it do. It can't force its members to listen to it and that is why some people say that it is a weak institution.

it's an international organization that was form after World War II to further prevent conflict between countries so another war wouldn't start. (not doing such a good job at the moment though:) the Un is made up of 192 countries (members:)

The United Nations is a bunch of corrupt foreign politicians that your mommy and daddy's taxes are used to pay them not to hurt us, not to hurt their own people, and hopefully not to say nasty things about our politicians that will make the politicians of our country look bad.
