Have you ever heard Hootie and the Blowfish perform? That's why they are called Blowfish - they blow!

Actually they are called Puffer fish. Blow-fish is the slang term they received.
The reason they are called such is due to their defense mechanism they use to deter predators. When frightened they inflate themselves to appear much larger. During inflation, the spines that normally lay flat against their bodies begin to protrude. Now they appear to be a really big spiny fish that does not seem worth the predators time.
You can actually get some at pet stores.

because blowfish (also called pufferfish) can "blow" themselves up to discourage predators - see link below
"The Pufferfish is also known as the blowfish, fugu, swellfish, and globefish. It is called the pufferfish because when it is threatened, it puffs up to about twice its normal size by gulping water. In this engorged state, the pufferfish can swim at only about half its normal speed."

bc they blow up in a big bubble to keep predators away...some have spikes too...
so...recap on my logic...a blowfish is called a blowfish bc...they are able blow up like a bubble!

When they are threatened, they puff, or blow them -selves up, as a defence mechanism. By appearing larger than they are, it supposedly discourages predators.
