interesting question. Saw a movie once, think it was MASK. He explained the following to a blind girl:

He put a stone in the freezer and another one in boiling water. He then gave the freezing stone to the blind girl and said: This is blue. After that he gave he the hot stone and said: And this is red.

I will never forget that scene

I don't think that you could give a description that would distinguish red from the other colors, but you might be able to describe something about what colors are like. With our sight we can distinguish the shape of objects and their size and the texture of their surface. These are all things that a blind person could understand because they can be felt with the hands. You can say that the things around you have color also, which is a property of the light reflected off of them, that they are like texture, in a way, but sensed by the eyes instead of the hands or skin. That there are 7 or 8 different colors but they grade into each other and each one has some variations.

Since snakes see heat as white and red, I'd go with hot.

I would tell him / her that it's kind of like touching something that is warm. Most blind people associate things by touch.

You tell them it's a hot color - warm like the sun feels on their face. or warm, like the firepit at the beach when we roast marshmellows...close your eyes and use your imagination. :)
