My son broke his left arm this summer while skateboarding. He's 11. When he was 5, he broke his right arm by tripping and falling on it.

Too many ways to list here. Sports impacts/twisting, auto accident jamming the primary bone into the elbow, doors slamming on the arm or other objects impacting it, etc. etc. There are different types of fractures and many different causes.

You can break your arm by landing on it when you fall or hitting it really hard on a metal pole.

If, as you say, you are researching this for a paper, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has a website that is very helpful in researching mechanisms of injury: http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/
You can also look on WebMD: http://www.webmd.com
or Emedicine: http://www.emedicine.com
