Hey - I just taught this topic today! Are you one of my students?
f(-2) simply means that wherever you see an x in the equation, replace it with -2.
f(-2) = 5(-2)^2 - 3(-2) + 1
The rest is just BEDMAS and calculator work!

f(-2) = 5(-2)^2 - 3(-2) + 1
f(-2) = 5(4) + 6 + 1
f(-2) = 20 + 7
f(-2) = 27
