Our superintendent dropped multi-age classes even after I handed in a bunch of letters and a petition of support. He claims those programs were not cost effective. Yet he said he would move to distric if hire now refuses to do so and negotiated a $20,000 rasie because as he says, gas prices are high. Is this selfish? To put in a huge raise, yet cut education? How can I get this guy out and put education back in our school?

Run for a position on the school board.

However, "a bunch of letters and a petition" isn't really enough to keep a program. Did you have any academic reserach supporting your position? Were the letters written by education professionals (and I'm not just talking about teachers here)? Beyond ECE classes, I'm not sure that there is much proven value to multi-age classes. Young people experience the different stages of cognitive, social and emotional development very quickly, so it's often good to keep them with students of the same age.

As for his salary, few public officials set their own salary. If his salary is coming from public funds, there should be some controls in place to keep his salary in line with regional norms. Look into the process that lead to his salary increase. Make sure the "i"s are dotted and the "t"s crossed.

Wow...I'm sorry to hear of that. That superintendent certainly doesn't have the best interests of the students at hand. Can you go to the shcool board and present this issue to them?
