i like to cut off bottom leaves that start to hang down and am wondering if i am damaging the tree.

I've done it plenty of times on different palms - the only harm done is to your hands and arms as you disopse of them. Shape it up as you like!

No, it will be just fine. Its easier to trim them while they are green. After they are dead; they are harder to cut. Same for the seed pods it grows. Cut them off before they open up and they are easier to dispose of as well.

no it will be fine.
just make sure if you have a palm with a diesease to clean your saw blade well before useing it on any other trees.

Good grief, mine would be dead by now if that were the case.
So I would say no, you're OK to cut away.
