Everytime I debate this issue with Americans someone will always answer 'If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns', and 'guns protect the innocent'
so, using the same logic, isnt it about time schools in the USA allowed all students to carry AK47's to school? then young Gunmen will be afraid to threaten their fellow schoolkids

Some people are not getting the point of this question are they. Seems to me essexfriendly is not saying its a good idea for kids to have guns, just that following the pro gun lobby logic of allowing the good guys to have guns to protect themselves from the bad guys, then the schoolkids are the 'good guys' so give them all guns and they can protect themselves. This is obviously a ridiculous thing to do as having all these kids packing guns will inevitably lead to more shootings and more deaths (through arguments, emotional problems etc). Yet the gun lobby can't grasp the same thing is true on the larger scale. Remember, the bad guy is far more likely to shoot you if he thinks you have a gun and might shoot him. Try to work out why you have one of the highest, if not the highest, gun related deaths in the world, and this in a supposedly civilized society. It's simple people, more guns more deaths.

That's not very realistic. The 5 year olds couldn't carry them they are too heavy.

You can't help NUTS when they twist off. The NUT could use a knife a bone a baseball bat or any number of other tools to accomplish death but you don't complain about them. That is why your logic is askewed.

People kill people not what was in there hand at the time.

Had the teachers in the Amish school had a phone or a gun they could have ended that situation as soon as the NUT walked in by putting a bullet between his eyes. Unfortunately they didn't and innocent people had to die because of one NUT.

People kill each other every day in automobile accidents but I don't hear you complaining about cars. Cars don't kill people the morons with their heads stuck up somewhere else or on the damn cell phone do. Oh, you say it was an accident. Bull. There are no accidents, just stupid mistakes the morons and nuts make and the rest of us stand around with our mouths open saying, "What happened, he was such a nice guy" Oblivious because we wouldn't think to do such an evil or bad thing.

Unfortunately there are bad people in this world and as long as there are bad people good people need to be armed and aware in order to prevent bad things from happening. More people die every year at the hands of their doctor then by being killed by guns. You don't say, "lets ban doctors do you?"

You don't want to carry a gun then don't. When the fighting breaks out and you are running like a scalded ape because the only thing you have in your hand is air, I will be putting a bullet into the bad guys head. You can thank me later.

You are a genius!

Thats exactly what we should do! I mean he's right! Why do americans have guns? Because it's in their constitution right! It's for their own protection! Every human being has the right to protect themselves from the other. So every Kid should be given a gun. Teach them how to use them properly and responsibly and hey bingo we go kids who can blow the nuts of any 15 year old kid dressed in NEO gear ranting "LIFE IS EVIL". Blow that motherfuck er to hell!

I mean look at England, where guns are illegal and nobody is allowed to have them. But we still have lots of gun deaths, about 200 last year I heard.I mean people actually go into banks with no protection. Some gang nut might come in and blow their head off!! If everybody had guns, the american death rate from guns would fall from 12,000 annually to i Guess what 400? 200? In a society that obsessed with firearms, the only sensible thing really is to give everyone a firearm and hope for the best. Think about it, you're in a kwik-e-mart and some guy comes in with a sawnoffshotgum, bad mistake buddy, Ned Flanders has a motherfucki n UZI in his coat,

fair point. I am one of those "crazy" Americans who think that we shouldn't have a lot of the guns. Handguns for personal protection...maybe, rifles and shotguns for hunting...sure (although I don't hunt). High powered semi-automatic handguns and rifles...no, armor piercing bullets (cop killer bullets)...hell no. In the words of Robin Williams...when's the last time you've seen a deer wear a bullet proof vest? I know some people will spout the "right to bear arms" (second amendment). But what these people often forget to do is READ the ENTIRE amendment:
Right for the people to keep and bear arms, as well as to maintain a militia. (A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed. ) Unless you are in a well organized militia then this really doesn't apply to you.

You sure are weird.
AK 47s, how can a kid manage an AK47,
No a small calibre pistol, nice and light, repeater, 8 or 10 shot lethal at short range annoying at medium range, that is what kids should have and it would have deterred the gunman.
Perhaps teacher should have a .45 and a rifle, Short model lee Enfield would be ideal, Piece of history and lethal at a mile.

Guns are not the problem, it's the people who use them.

If we outlaw guns in America then the good guys won't have the protection from the bad guys who will have guns anyway.
Bad guys don't obey the laws, only good guys do.

Common sense and history has proved itself time and time again.

It is really scary what is happening on what seems to be a daily basis in American schools, manic gunmen going in and killing those poor innocent kids, don't they have locked doors on the schools over there, something is going to have to happen before the kids do take it upon themselves to carry a gun in their school bag, I despair of what the world is coming to.

You are being absurd to say you want AK-47's for every kid. They are too young to handle them, but if everyone is armed, would-be killers have no easy victims to shoot down. I carry a pistol if I think I need one, but perhaps you don't have the freedom to do that. Where do you live? I suppose you have no guns, but perhaps you have a do-nothing Queen. I'll take my guns any day.

1950: virtually no gun control, far more guns per capita in America than ever before.

1950: NO school shootings, much lower overall murder rate.

Therefore, it is logical to deduce that GUNS are not the reason for school shootings and high murder rates.
