8 hours is the recommended amount of sleep to be alert and active the next morning, but when sick more is better because your body is drained of energy while your body fights off the cold.
To be able to relax COMPLETELY you can't do it with just sleep alone... some things I have learned and tried that work great are:
1. get a CD with ocean sounds, storm sounds.. something like that.. your preference.
2. get a drink of water, go to the bathroom, turn off all the lights, put on comfy pjs
3. make sure you wont have to get up again
4.lay down with your cd playing and start meditating..
it's not really meditating but its close.. just listen to the sounds on your cd and think of being in that place, quiet and relaxed... take a few deep breaths.. then slowly start saying take the pain away from my feet, take away from my legs.. say this slowly all the way up your body.. listen to your cd some more.. go back to that special place and start your chant again.. keep in mind say it in your mind.. your meditating!
Enjoy.. you will feel relaxed. you will sleep great, and when you wake up you will feel you have been at a spa on a secluded beach for a month.

Everyone is different. I can usually get by on around 6 1/2 to 7 hours of sleep a nite. Sometimes I need more especially if I am sick or stressed out over something.
