It means love is worth the hurt it can cause. If you loved and it ended badly it was still worth it in the end. To love and be hurt is better than to never have experienced love.

It goes like this: " It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all." It means it's better to have loved someone and then loose that love than to have never loved someone in the first place

If this was an arguement, I'd argue.

"Love? Define your love."

Most of your love is a relationship between a couple. A love of a parent to a child is also priceless, have you seen that innocent smile on a baby's face? I believe it's one of the reason that makes bringing up a child all worth while!

You lose it all IF your child puts you in an old folks home of course, but that explains the quote. :P

Hehe.

This a a "famous" quote from a work titled "In Memoriam" by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The quote is "Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." You can give it your own interpretation, but basically it means that the experience of being in love, even if not "successful" is better than never having been in love at all. The experience is so valuable that having it alone is a good thing, even if you "lose" at love. This is true of many life experiences.

"It is better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all"

To experience love is one of the greatest things in this world. Whether it is someone who is loving you, someone whom you love, or maybe you both love each other. Whatever way it is, love is a wonderful thing. To be loved makes you feel accepted and special. To love someone is to care and to get the lovely feeling that comes from making someone else happy. When you love each other it is a constant two way relationship of give and take. To experience this is joyous. But sometimes you can fall out of love. But in my opinion, if you stop caring about someone completely, you never loved them. True love is forever. Even if you don't talk to a friend for twenty years, if you truly loved them, you will care about them for the rest of your life. This in itself is a partial loss, but not a total loss.

The quote is saying that it is better to experience something this wonderful, and lose it, than to never experience such a wonderful thing as love.

But remember, God will love you always, and his love can never be lost. If you feel as though your heart is breaking, as though you will never be loved again, turn to Him and he will wrap his loving arm around you and show you the meaning of true love.

Because love can hurt, but it sucks to never have been in love. Because love is a beautiful thing...by the way the saying actuallly goes "It is better to have loved and lost then to never have loved at all."

i think you are missing part of the quote....it should be "it is better to have love AND LOST then to never have loved at all"

love is such an amazing experience, that which cannot be duplicated in any way, shape, or form, it is worth experiencing even though sometimes it may end with with hurt.

to have once felt that feeling is far greater wondering what it would be like

it's like this:
If you have been blessed enough to have loved someone and to be loved by someone it means your heart is open, you care, your aware of the meaning of love and you don't want to know how it feels to have lost it, or how to live without it.
If you haven't loved someone or been loved by someone, it means you have a cold hard heart, you haven't been able to experience the true meaning of life... you wouldn't know what you had lost because you didn't have it to lose, there for you haven't experienced life if you haven't loved at all.

Several answerers corrected you on the saying. but here's what it means in laymans terms:

the experience of being in love even though it may come to negative heartbreak from losing a love outweighs the loneliness of no love at all.

The saying it is better to love and lost than to have never loved at all.

It is saying it is better to have a taste of love and all the feelings it comes with and lose it (death, not working out, etc.) than to have never experienced it at all.

Please note that you have just butchered the bard. Shakespeare wrote that 'it is better to have loved AND LOST than to have never loved at all', and it quite simply means that the pain of losing love is insignificant than the empty, meaningless life of someone who has never experienced the giving and receiving of love.
Tennyson stole it from Shakespeare, who was Christopher Marlowe anyway.
