You have 416kb because of the FAT filing system. In other words, thats the space the format is taking up. You can't get rid of it.
Viking did not pay Apple for the rights to use their formatting system. They only paid Microsoft.

Many of these USB drives do not work with BOTH Mac and PC. In fact, if one does say that they will work wiith both, once you start using it, it will only work with THAT ONE. They often don't work for transferring data between a Mac and PC. That's life.

If your USB pen is to be used for a PC, you might try to REFORMAT it.

Reformat using FAT-16 instead of FAT-32.
Using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities), select Erase and then select MS-DOS 16 or something like that. If you choose MS-DOS (without the 16) it will automatically format according to how large your device is, and if it formats for FAT-32, then you have a problem.

The drive has to create a file system (formatting) to be usable and even without any files, some space will be taken up by the file system desciptor.

A lot of devices work with Mac, even though they say Mac is not supported.
