Its short for Richard- and no, most people dont care. I for one hate to say it in public (there is a guy here at work named it and i hate to announce his name on the speaker). It isnt any worse than any other nickname with the exception that it has been used in a different way for so long, people just associate it with sexual meanings.

I know a man who had the last name Dick and he DID change it! As for a first name, Dick is usually short for Richard, so the person could call himself Ric or Rich and smack the heck out of anyone who called him Dick, lol.
