My favorite Poe story has always been "The Cask of Amontillado," but when I taught eighth-graders, we began the year with a unit on Tales of Terror. "The Black Cat" would be our first story, and it was the kids' favorite. We read it aloud with the lights out and the shades drawn. Not exactly pitch dark, but close enough. Scarey, scarey!

Then they would get started writing their own "tales of terror." They would be so horrific that one student teacher thought I'd better refer my students to a psychiatrist. Ralph's paragraph above (very Poe-tic!!!) takes me back.

So, though I didn't like "The Black Cat" myself as well as some of the other Poe stories, it was my favorite one to teach! Brrrrrr.

What a gift.

Did you like "Tell-Tale Heart"? Do you like to read Poe aloud? What about his poetry, esp. "The Raven"? Thanks for the memories. His words still haunt me.

Once upon a midnight dreary,
While I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore . . . .
While I nodded nearly napping,
Suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping,
Rapping at my chamber door . . . .

Many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
A maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabelle Lee.
She was a child and I was a child
In the kingdom by the sea
But we loved with a love far greater than love,
I am my Annabelle Lee . . . .

While reading, I soon found a dislike to it arising within me. This was just the reverse of what I had anticipated; but I know not how or why it was -- others evident fondness for it rather disgusted and annoyed me. By slow degrees, these feelings of disgust and annoyance rose into the bitterness of hatred. I avoided finishing it; a certain sense of shame, and the remembrance of my former reviews of other Poe works , preventing me from physically abusing my computer. I did not, for some weeks, strike a key, or otherwise violently ill use the machine; but gradually --very gradually --I came to reading anything upon it with unutterable loathing, and would flee silently from its odious presence, as from the breath of a pestilence.

I guess it was too much for poor Ralphy up there.

It is one of my personal favorites however. I love all Poe, but this one hits closer to home. I guess because I can relate to the story and events so well.

I liked it. This is one of Poe's easiest-to-understand stories, I think. Some of his "less famous" pieces just aren't as interesting.
