I have always found that choosing an issue and tying it into current events always helps captivate an audience. For example, you could do a speech on Martin Luther King and tie in his teachings and philosophy to today's current events, such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. You could choose one side and make a case for it by showing how his teachings relate (or not) to what is going on in the world today.

This is just an example to illustrate that a speech is always interesting no matter what the topic if it is tied into an issue that either the audience is interested in, affected by, or aware of, and finding a way to make the audience think about that topic in a different way.

Explain what anime is and why it is popular. Or pick just one show and explain it.

Explain what manga is and why it is popular. Talk about your favorite manga series.

Pick an unusual animal and talk about that to the class.
