The width is x. The length is 2x + 9. The perimeter is therefore x + x + 2x + 9 + 2x + 9 = 6x + 18 = 42. You should be able to solve this using simple algebra to find x, the width.

Let the width be x. Then the length is 9+2x.

Perimeter is length + length + width + width

42=9+2x+9+2x+x+x

Collect like terms.
42=18+6x

Now solve for x
24=6x
x=4
Thusly the width is 4 inches

l = 2w + 9
P = 42

P = 2(l + w)

42 = 2((2w + 9) + w)
42 = 2(2w + 9 + w)
42 = 2(3w + 9)
42 = 6(w + 3)
7 = w + 3
w = 7

l = 2(7) + 9 = 14 + 9 = 23

Length = 23in
Width = 7in

ANS : 7 inches

l=9+2w
2(l+w)=42 so 2w + 2(9+2w)=42 so 2w+18+4w=42 so 6w=24 so w=4 so l=17
