Crocodiles (subject)

Were (verb)

You seriously didn't know that? :-(

(Oops, I can see others don't know verbs either! Ignore those who are saying "in" is a verb. It's not, it's a preposition.)

Wow. It seriously hurts my brain to see people write that the verb is in. Are they really that stupid? And why do you (xasshaiza...) need to ask wikipedia for a question like this? Are you challenged by the question as well? Also, the answerer may be very young, just so those of you who said "Do your own homework, you should know this" know.
Were is the verb, and crocodiles is the subject.

subject - crocodiles
verb -were (as in a state of being)

Change the sentence around so it is a statement of fact and not a question to determine subject and verb, thusly. "The crocodiles were in the small lake."

in the small lake is a prepositional prhase explaining the state of the crocodiles.

Edited to Add: I didn't need to ask Wikipedia, I merely used it as a "cite" so the person giving query could more easily read for themselves and gain knowledge. That's a mighty long nose you have there, briancs342.

Subject - crocodiles
Verb - were

The question is asking about the crocodiles - that is your subject. The action - verb - in the sentence is were.

The question is about crocodiles - so "crocodiles" is the subject.
"Were" is a conjugation of the irregular verb "to be"
I am, I was. He is, he was. We are, we were

"In" is a preposition, not a verb.

Subject= Crocodiles
Verb = Were

Almost every other answer on here is WRONG. I checked to make sure I'm right.

IN is not a verb. Its a preposition.

WERE is a verb.
------What were they doing? They WERE (wherever).

The subject is CROCODILES
------Who was it? The CROCODILES.

Hope I helped, Have a nice day!

:)

Crocodiles is the subject

Were is the verb.

TOTALLY ignore these other people who say differently. I was an English major in college, but this stuff is elementary. Kinda scary....
