Get a mongoose and let it go.

You can try to catch it and then release it again. Or get a broom and leave the door open. Hire a neighbor kid to catch it. Hopefully you don't have a cat or dog, otherwise it will be dinner for them. Mostly it will try to find a way to escape, just help it when it does.

Many lizards don't go far away, they know where the heat is and the food and water. I normally tell people to open the cage a little keep the heat light on add water and food (as long as they don't get out) and make his cage the best place for him to be, and they almost always come back. If I knew what kind he was I might be able to help more, nocturnal lizards (geckos...) you want to look for at night with a flashlight. A wild caught one knows about what outside is so it may be gone, but human raised lizards will most likely be close by.

when a lizard goes out of its environment, (which it has done in my house and caused havoc, ha ha) what i done was left on the heaters and lights in its housing, with plenty of water and food in there and turn off all other lights in the house. the lizard wont be long returning back into where it is safe and warm. as the saying goes "there is no place like home"
on the other hand if it is a wild lizard then you can buy a trap probably in your local hardware shop which is safe and very efficient and does not hurt the lizard, which can then be released back to the wild

This sounds like you are talking about a wild lizard, possibly a house gecko or green anole. Unless you freak out at seeing one I'd just forget about it. They eat bugs, I'd rather have lizards than bugs.
