Take the Blue and Gold Fleet from Pier 39 over to Alcatraz. Make sure you have tickets in advance for Alcatraz. The place sells out.

Unfortunately, tourists going to Alcatraz are getting caught up in a nasty little labor dispute. San Francisco Chronicle report here:

The government has actually handed over the Alcatraz contract to Hornblower Cruises (non-unionized).
Blue and Gold Fleet (which is unionized) is unhappy with the decision, so you might see some of their people protesting (handing out flyers, asking folks to sign petitions) along the Wharf.
In the meantime, you'll need to contact Hornblower to go to Alcatraz. It operates out of Pier 33 (which is further away from the Wharf than the old Blue and Gold dock).

The Blue and Gold Fleet is the only operator for visiting Alcatraz. You should book tickets at least 2 weeks in advance because it gets really, really crowded. You can book them online and then pick them up when you get there - just put your credit card in the self-serve machines (kind of like when you buy movie tickets online).
