Ok first things first.
1) change your oil every 3-4k miles...don't miss this. 3k if you don't drive alot and 4 if you put a lot of miles on each week. Choose a good oil such as castrol and stick with it.

2) Check the tire pressure at least once a month. And look at your tires each time you go to get in your car. If they don't look right go to the tire shop and have them check the pressure...most will do this for free.

3) Check your oil, transmission fluid and coolant at least once every couple of weeks.

4) When you park your car...look under it to see if there are any spots from oil leakage before you parked...(I have parked over others oil leaks) so look and make sure that it isn't yours leaking.

5) When you buy fuel...if the pump truck is there filling the pumps...do not buy fuel there that day...it will mix what water is in their storage tanks into the fuel and make your car run like...well you know...not a good thing. YOu may even ask the attendant if they filled the storage tanks that day...if they did go to a different station.

When you do change your oil...fill your tank and use a fuel injector cleaner in your tank as well..only do this with a full tank.

Right off the top of my head that's all I have to offer...I suppose I could go on and on but them are the main things you need to do.

If you are interested in maintenance (and the car is new), then your dealer will provide a maintenance schedule for the warranty. That'll include oil changes, tire pressure/rotation etc., and standard checks for mechanical problems.

Otherwise, if the car is used, take it to a mechanic you trust before you buy. He/she should be able to advise you about the car's mechanical condition and any repairs that are needed.
