This generally only happens when a cow has 4 udders or less. It is to stop the poor, unfortunate cow from feeling inadequate. However, when a cow has 5 udders, a 4-legged stool is used. Once, due to a freak accident, a 24-uddered cow was born. Several Lumberjacks died that week. Very tragic.
Get out of my house.

Stools with 3 legs are much more stable than ones with 4. It doesn't matter if one leg is a bit shorter with 3, wheras with 4 it would rock slightly.

3 points determine a plane (geometry). Original barn floors were not perfectly flat (i.e., dirt), so a 3 legged stool was required to keep it from rocking.

Erm, assuming this isn't a riddle, the answer is so that it will be stable on uneven floors. Same reason traditional pub tables have 3 legs, on an uneaven flagged or cobbled floor, four legs would be likely to be unbalanced and rock

Three legs is the most stable on uneven surfaces. Four legs are only useful on level surfaces.
