That depends more on what sort of earphones you are using, as opposed to what sort of player you are using.

If you are using Bose noise canceling earphones or certain types of earbuds, You will probably hear fine. Other headphone, particularly older styles, probably not.

My mother bought an iPod Nano for that exact reason. She use's hers for that all the time. She has a riding mower and loves it. But she does not like using iTunes to load the music. I use the iRiver with a Napster togo subscription. I love it because it is cheap and I can download all the music I want.

Probably. But if you had it loud enough to hear while mowing, you'd be risking damage to your hearing.

Recent news (and personal experience) suggest iPods are too loud for safety. I'd play my iPod when I was done mowing.

Go into the settings on the Ipod and turn the volume all the way up.

Use whatever volume control you have and crank it up until you can hear it. I may have a Zen Micro instead of an Ipod, but they shouldn't be all too different volume-wise.

it dependes on the headphones you have. They make headphones that are made to block out all external noise, so all you hear is the music. Bose makes a great set, they are expensive but well worth it.

That's to loud! You may suffer permanent hearing injuries. Call and ear doctor's office. They may have a free handout, as to what is and is not safe! Earbuds are worse, because
they can go inside your ear and get closer to your eardrum. Use head phones instead!
