You ovulate 14 days BEFORE the first day of your period. That's why it's hard for people like me with irregular periods to know when they are going to ovulate.

Most women ovulate 12-16 days *before* their period and within individual women, this rarely fluctuates by more than a day.
You can either use an OTC ovulation predictor kit OR learn how to monitor your body's fertility signs to determine when *you* actually ovulate. I highly recommend "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler for the latter (as well as for learning loads about your cycles in general and dispelling myths like the "Day 14" myth.)

if you have a regular 28 day cycle, you ovulate approximately 2 weeks after the first day of your last period, or 2 weeks before the first day of your next period (same thing, whichever you prefer). if your cycle is irregular its hard to say.

I have found websites with the ovulation calendar's help. Every woman is different, so everyone ovulates at a different time. I use mymonthlycycles.com its free and there are several calculators on here. There are also the kits that you can buy at the store... I use both the website and the kits and it clearly shows when I ovulate!
