Sodom and Gomorrah were two sinful cities mentioned in the Bible. The cities and all of the inhabitants were destroyed by God because of their sin, except for one good man and his family who were told to leave and not to look back. The man's name was Lot . His wife looked back in disobedience of God and was turned into a pillar of salt. Sodom and Gomorrah were located in the present country of Iraq.

Gomorrah is spelling in Hebrew 'Amora meaning [Tyrants] or [Rebellious people].
Sodom is spelling in Hebrew S'dom meaning [Burning].
---- On the association of Sodom (city, noun) and sodomy (verb)
The meaning of the cities can describe related or associated words, but to say sodomy is the same as Sodom is not correct. Sodomy was generally practiced in the city, this is understood because the Bible describes the debasement of the people and there was no sexual limits. The men of the city beat on Lot's door and they want to have the male travelers (angels) for sexual pleasure. This is where the word sodomy is associated with the city of Sodom.

A story in the Bible about how that town got destroyed because the people there liked buttsecks. But I can't believe that, I think the REAL reason why it was (IF was) destroyed is because the people there were intolerant and hostile and liked to rape people who visited their town.
