I've had mine for 8 years...I still have all my teeth, intact and undamaged. I have no nerve damage in my tongue, I can taste and speak perfectly.
Good ideas for minimizing the risk of tooth damage are making sure of proper length as well as acrylic balls for the ends of your barbell. Position is importatant. too. Too far forward and the risk of striking against teeth and being bitten increases.
Healing time is unique to the individual, but generally ranges from 4-6 weeks. The swelling and tenderness will go away sooner than that, but it's still vulnerable to irritation, contaminants, and infection if it's not cared for the whole way through. For myself, I know I take longer to heal than most...I'm just slow that way.
Most importantly, as the decision to actually do it approaches, don't hesitate to talk to more than one piercer at more than one shop. Go with a piercer that you get a good "vibe" from. Avoid the "hipper-than-thou because I have fifty holes in my head" type people. They're likely to be competent, but tend not to make their clients comfortable. The absolute worst part of the whole experience is the anticipation...that is worse, by far, than the quick poke of the needle. You want somebody who can effectively reduce the anticipation with a good "bedside manner."
Finally. do talk to a professional and don't listen to your friends, relatives, or that guy who knows somebody whose dog's neighbor's proctologist's accountant once met a kid who got their tongue horribly infected and half their face fell off. They're not professionals and unless they've had it done themselves, can only speak from poorly related hearsay (not unlike most of the answers you'll get here).

Hi, I have my tongue pierced now for the past 4 yrs!its takes 2-3 weeks before the swelling goes down, each week changing to a smaller ball and bar! speaking will be a funny also!I thought about it for a long time before i got it done and because my boyfriend has his done i also got a second opinion,to prevent or reduce dental damage try wearing plastic balls instead.

It takes about a week to mostly heal. and umm about preventing dental damage. I dont think you can. But like my mom says. "For everything you want in life you have to take risks" ..... or something like that. I cant remember. Oh and if you are a teenager getting your tounge pierced because everyone says that people with tounge piercings kiss better than dont get your tounge pierced cause it NOT true. How well someone kisses depends on the person
=) Good Luck!!

It's possible that your mom will let you get pierced since you already have a tattoo and she already said maybe. Just read up on tongue piercings and learn about risks, infections, etc. I have mine pierced and they'll tell you everything you need to know there but just be prepared to eat soft foods and you may talk funny for the first two days afterwards because your tongue will be swollen. You clean it by doing salt water rinses after each meal, if you choose to use mouthwash it must have no alcohol. My piercer recommended Oral-B. If you have any more questions, feel free to email me.

Healling time depends on the person, but generally 4-6 weeks.

My personal story: I pierced my tounge a few months ago, but the barbell was to short and my tounge swelled like crazy (more then it should have under normal circumstances) so I had to remove the barbell within a couple days and let it heal over.

Don't
By doing it you will just be creating for yourself a nice highway to your body for STD's to enter your body. I wouldn't kiss or let a girl with a whole in her tongue to 'do anything you know '
scary

I have heard that it is very beneficial when performing fellatio or cunnilingus - never have actually been lucky enough to find out first hand though...
