I usually use all leather motocross boots. Stronger and more protective than race boots and pretty waterproof but need a lot more time to break in Dont get any with plastic protection it never softens up and makes gear change difficult.
Friend uses Boxing (the guys who beat each other sensless)boots as they have thinner soles so he can feel brake pedal better

if you really want the best boots available get a pair of chippewa super loggers. i work 10 hour shifts and never sit down and my feet never hurt. they are about $300 a pair at most shoe stores and easily worth that much. but i have bought them new on ebay for less than half that price with the original warranty. they are the best boots made if you really have to be on youre feet without ever taking a break

For off road boots try your local cycle shop. They have many in stock and can order many more.
For road use I get mine at red-wing shoe stores, the cycle boots there are awesome and very comfortable. They also have a warranty and are guaranteed water proof.

Depends on what you're looking for (cruiser-style boots, road racing boots, MX/off-road boots) but I've had a lot of luck with the following two websites:
newenough.com (despite the name, they sell new stuff)
motorcyclecloseouts.com
And for reader reviews on various models of gear:
motorcyclegearreview.com

There's this great shop in Johannesburg called Mosskay's. They have a fantastic range of just about everything and a good sense of humor too. You can fly direct from NY or London.
